Making Crystals In the Lab
Crystals can be made in the laboratory by a very simple chemical process. This process is called the nucleation process of crystals formation. The process can be carried out in your home with very few equipment, needed. The basic thing is you need is the solution of the chemical for which you need to make the crystals. Just make a solution by dissolving the chemical in any solvent like water etc to make it saturated. Mix the chemical so that there is no more capacity of mixing.
Crystal can be made by combining the molecules of the solute or the chemical dissolved. But the problem is that the attractive forces between these molecules are very weak and the sol vent molecules don't allow the molecules to combine. To start the crystal formation process, a solid thing is added in the solution. This acts as a base for the solute molecules to group them. The molecules are attracted to the base object and that reduces the resistance. This results in the collection of solute molecules on the substance. As the molecules group together a bigger molecule is created, that can be called pre-crystal, in the solution. This pre-crystal now attracts more and more solute molecules and its size becomes bigger and bigger. Due to the increase in crystal size the attraction is increased and crystal formation process is speed up.
This process continues till all the solute molecules are grouped together to make a big size crystal in the solution. This is, how are crystals formed in the laboratory.
